This concept works because the personal signal is baked into the concept itself, so even a simple execution reads as thought-through. It also helps that the surprise element carries much of the value — it turns an ordinary occasion into a small event. It asks for real effort, and that effort is the point: the recipient can see the hours in it, which is exactly why it outperforms its price.
