This concept works because the surprise element carries much of the value — it turns an ordinary occasion into a small event. It also helps that it works because it is unmistakably about them: the same gesture given to anyone else would not make sense. Execution is light — most of the work happens before the giving, which keeps the focus on the gesture itself.
